Navigating the Nexus of Brain and Vision
Our brains, while remarkable, can face vulnerability from accidents or illnesses like concussion, traumatic brain injuries or strokes. Unfortunately, these neurological challenges can have enduring effects on our visual system. This is where neuro vision at Fitzroy North Eye Centre steps in, focusing on enhancing visual function through tailored therapies.
What is Neuro-Optometric Vision Therapy?
Neuro-Optometric vision is a field within neuro-optometry that focuses on the intricate connection between our brain and visual perception. It addresses the effects of brain injuries, diseases, or neurological conditions on our ability to process visual information. Neuro-Optometric vision therapy aims to enhance visual function through tailored therapies and treatments and restore the vital link between our brain and what we see.
What Can Lead to Vision Issues Requiring Neuro-Visual Rehabilitation?
Neuro-visual rehabilitation may be necessary in any of the following scenarios:
- Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
- Concussions
- Cerebral vascular accidents (strokes)
- Neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson's, Alzheimer's)
- Sports-related head injuries
- Falls or accidents resulting in head trauma
- Car accidents
- Blunt force trauma to the head
- Medical conditions affecting the brain
- Post-surgical complications affecting brain function
- Visual Snow
What Are The Signs of Brain Injuries Affecting Vision?
If you or a loved one has experienced a brain injury, watch out for these signs:
- Difficulties with concentration
- Double vision
- Binocular dysfunction: eyes not working in harmony
- Sensory motor and spatial disorganisation (balance issues, trouble standing or turning)
- Sensitivity to glare and light
- Continuing to see an image after it is gone
- Print appearing to move, blur, or distort during reading
- Migraines, dizziness, brain fog, and confusion
The intricate visual pathways connecting the eyes to the brain can be damaged by seemingly minor incidents like falls on the playground or unexpected head impacts.
Why Should You Test Your Vision After a Brain Injury or Concussion?
Even though many people face vision problems after brain injuries, the significance of neuro-visual rehabilitation is often ignored in medical settings. That’s why it’s crucial to prioritise testing your vision and seeking neuro-visual rehabilitation after sustaining a brain injury, whether due to accidents, trauma, or medical conditions. By doing so, you're not only addressing the immediate challenges caused by the injury but also investing in your long-term well-being. Improved visual function translates to enhanced quality of life, increased independence and the ability to engage more fully in daily activities.
How Does a Concussion Affect Your Vision?
Diagnosis
To accurately diagnose and treat these conditions, we divide a Neuro-Optometric consultation over two sessions.
During Day 1, you will participate in a series of tests and scans, including retinal imaging, aiding your optometrist in the Day 2 consultation. Conducted by one of our qualified Optical Dispensers, these Day 1 tests include:
- Visual Fields testing
- Colour Fields testing
- Dynamic Vision tracking testing
- Balance Tracking
- Full Retinal health scans
The Day 1 tests require 45 to 90 minutes to complete, varying based on the patient's needs.
On Day 2, you'll proceed directly to an in-depth 60-minute consultation with one of our Neuro-Optometrists. During this session, a personalised treatment plan will be crafted to address your individual requirements.
A brain injury doesn't signify the end. The brain's plasticity allows for skill recovery. At Fitzroy North Eye Centre, our mission is to restore your visual well-being to its peak. If you're concerned about your visual health, schedule an appointment with our neuro-optometrists in Fitzroy North. Your journey to renewed vision starts here.
What is Visual Snow?
Visual Snow is a neurological condition marked by persistent visual disturbances, including static, flashing lights, and flickering dots within the visual field. This can be very debilitating and can be assisted with a combination of treatments. These symptoms can impact daily life. Our Optometrists, Sally and Winnie, have undergone extra training to help individuals affected by Visual Snow. If you or someone you know is troubled by these symptoms, please reach out to us to schedule a Neuro Consultation.
